Week 5: The wonderful Greek city of Taormina

Taormina

This has been my favorite place in Sicily! It is an ancient Greek city built on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The Teatro D'Antico dates back to the 3rd century BC! The Teatro is still in use, hosting classical orchestras and contemporary music. I think Jethro Tull was the headlining act during the weekend I was there. From the theater you can see the Adriatic Sea and Mount Etna in the background. 

Taormina is well-known to tourists so you can except some crowds in the summer months, but it doesn't seem unbearably crowded if you stay off the main few streets. There are ancient structures on every corner. 

I stayed in an exceptional B&B run by Michele, a delightful Sicilian-German man. In my cute studio I had an unbeatable terrace with views over the city and sea. Words do not do it justice.... I will be returning here again for sure.

I am dusting off this blog after an 8-year hiatus. So much has happened in my life, career and relationships, including aging nearly a decade. Perhaps the most shaping influence of late has been living through a once-in-a-generation pandemic and the way the last 16 months has reset my priorities, needs, and expectations of myself and the folx around me. I've realized that I can do with a lot less. Frankly, I've worn the same 5 tops for most of the past year, paired with shorts or joggers, and flip flops most days. The shoes and clothes in my closet have been ignored  -- they're too fussy, constricting, wrinkly, unnecessary -- and I just can't be bothered. Week 11: Lausanne, Switzerland

This weekend I decided to get away to the French-speaking part of Switzerland, in Lausanne. It’s a beautiful and historic city on the banks of Lac Leman, also known as Lake Geneva - one of the largest freshwater lakes in Western Europe. And it is the official home of the Olympics.  Though I haven’t spoken French in a long while, I found it quite easy to read signs and menus as the Latin roots and linguistic structure is so familiar to me. In fact, when I went to the Museum of the Olympics, I could understand the French descriptions far easier than the Swiss-German ones! English is not recognized (yet) as an official language in the Switzerland due to some push back from the French and Italian-speaking minority Swiss who say the Swiss-Germans should prioritize learning French and Italian before English. Week 9: Freiburg - Germany's Green City

I have arrived in Freiburg im Breisgau, a university town in the southern state of Bavaria, Germany, near the famed Black Forest. It is a very picturesque city about the size of Porto, Portugal (150K population) and what strikes me the most is it's wonderful infrastructure of trains, electric trams and buses, and the diversity and friendliness of its people. There are people of all backgrounds here, some second and third generation immigrants from the waves of the 60s and 70s and more recent transplants who have come as refugees or skilled workers. Plus the university population who have come to study in an old and respected university and the Bavarians themselves.   Freiburg is known as the greenest city in Germany, both for its fine weather and also its commitment to climate change measures.
